The average Indian is so completely jaded with politics that if he were any more disengaged he would be comatose. If someone thinks that that emasculated, greedy, opportunity squandering wimp Rajiv was a great PM they must be smoking crack. If they think that that criminal mother of his was great (authoritative I think was the word used) then they maybe should read more about her little "PMS" episode also known in Indian history as the Emergency. The result of her little tantrum with the Allahabad High court almost turned us into a Pakistan. In my opinion Gujral was probably the most decent man (after Nehru) to occupy the office but completely ineffective because a lamb cannot control wolves. Now of course I feel its going to be lil' Miss Priyanka - just as soon as she figures out how she can sneak in and hog the limelight and get back in the family business (I am sure the swiss bank accounts have been depleting so its time to start transfering again). I am actally in favor of amending the constitution to prevent anyone of Gandhi / Nehru lineage from ever holding public office again. Let them get the hell out of politics forever. Question still is who is the right replacement. I cant think of a single one that has all India appeal - this is the problem with India - India is like the EU in terms of regional differences of language and culture - its virtually impossible to generate a candidate that is palatable across the majority of states. pmalik 11/27/2000 ( 70 of 84 ) after vajpayee, there can be only chaos. and that would be a pity because he is the only leader who could have do some much for the country but chose not to, either because of his lack of understanding of the vital issues confronting the country or for fear of displeasing the allies of the nda. he has lately been making extremely uncharacteristic ominous statements on ayodhya, apparently at the behest of the rss and with an eye to garnering support and votes in the coming elections in up. what can one say about his decision to appoint rss sympathiser agnihotri ‘ambassador at large’ in washington? seems more as if a wild animal has been set loose to terrorise people. frankly, i didn’t know such a post existed till now. another decision to please the rss, no doubt. the recent cabinet reshuffle (expansion?) effected by vajpayee holds little promise. it’s sad that the prime minister chose to retain a minister like yashwant sinha even after the us-64 fiasco simply because he (vajpayee) could not find a suitable replacement. the government has failed miserably in all fronts: right from kandahar hijacking to kargil to the unilateral ceasefire to tehelka to the us-64 fiasco to agra summit to starvation deaths (that the deaths are still taking place in spite of mountains of foodgrain rotting in government gowdowns for want of storage space, is simply criminal) —the list seems to go on and on. the point is we gave vajpayee a chance and he chose to do nothing. his seemingly invincible image as a statesman and a man of consensus has taken a severe beating in the process. but coming back to the issue. if vajpayee goes, the nda will not survive. so it is futile to think of advani for the top post. and if the congress does manage to come to power, i hope we are spared the torture of having sonia g. as prime minister. i still can’t get over her ‘we’ve got the numbers’ debacle. apart from the issue of her citizenship, she simply does not have the maturity or understanding of the problems of india to hold such a post. i’m not saying that other politicians are any better in this respect, but then that’s the tragedy of indian politics. the congress has a number of honest and capable leaders (as do other the parties) like manmohan singh, m. scindia, etc., but these people lack the political backing, the manipulative skill and cunning that are prerequisites for anybody aspiring for the top job. if a third front comes to power with the outside support from the congress and other parties, we all know how fickle the congress can be. history will repeat itself and we will be in for yearly (or sooner) elections. sad but that is how i see the future. but of course, all that can change if vajpayee decides to act as a prime minister ought to and do what is expected of him. but that’s a big if… |

The new comer should make indian external affair policy well such that we donot get any trouble from any foreign countries especially neighbouring countries. Then we can focus on internal affairs. |
