Rock Music, anyone? Rose     1/27/2001 12:12:19 PM
No kidding!
Hey, I am excited to be here and make friends in India. And to be the first one to start a discussion. I believe the sort of Indians who have access to the web are crazily into rock music. Is that true?

No kidding!
Uh, okay. How do I start? I believe I already have. What sort of rock music do you folk listen to? My own preferences are sorta a mixed bag. But tell me about yours and we'd rock. Why don't we start an MP3 exchange thread too? But then there is Napster.

What do you think about prodigy?

Prem  1/27/2001 12:12:19 PM  ( 3 of 37 )
Prem Naam Hai Mera, Not Chopra.
A child prodigy? Like, say, Doogie Houser, MD, whichever way you spell his second name?

Prem Naam Hai Mera, Not Chopra.
Rose, pray, do tell us where you are logging in from and who told you that Indians are into rock music?

We consider it an aberration here in amchi Mumbai. But Balasaab Thackeray, he's a great leader. Knows the pulse of the people and all. Even called Michael Jackson (we call him Mai Ka Lal Jai Kishan -- sorry, PJ, but couldn't resist. Thought you might like a bit of sociological parenthetical asides) here. I believe no one was allowed to use the loo he used.

Rock music? Well, the Delhi scene actually sucks. Or maybe I am too old to rock and roll. And too young to die. Gotta go, but do tell where you are logging from and why are you so interested in India.

I have access to web in India and I am not crazily into rock music or anything. So there.

Rose  1/27/2001 12:12:19 PM  ( 6 of 37 )
No kidding!
Cactus, Preeti & Prem, thank you for responding to my message.

Cactus, who or what is Prodigy? Yet another rock band? I am sorry I am caught up in a time-warp and haven't followed any rock band/group after the 70's. Okay, let me admit, I have, but only very eclectically and discriminately. Like U2, Floyd, Sting, REM etc.

The sort of Rock bands I was talking about and those which I find almost all my Indian friends very knowledgeable about are: Floyd, Tull, Dire Straits, Simon & Gargunkel, Beatles and so on. But it is posssible that cultural upbringing and access may have had something to do with it.

Prem, as I say in my profile, and as they say where I am (I am logging in from home, from my computer, if that helps), I'll tell you if you tell me. But since it's no secret - let me admit that I am a British citizen in London.

rock is the purest form of emotion.there is nothing better than listening to a black sabbath or a metallica and letting all your frustrations out.how i long for the day when the music churned out is of the dylan, sabbath, skynnrd type.i was born in the wrong decade dammit.

the music is have to put up with nowadays is the damn backstreet boys and their ilk.rock has now been reduced to limp bizkit and other bands that just have a front man screaming like a maniac.hopefully a day might come when songs like blowin in the wind come out.

rekhi  1/27/2001 12:12:19 PM  ( 9 of 37 )
Well.. take it or not.
GUITAR RULES!!!

Do u think there is really any difference between Human Nature, 911, N’Sync and ten other boybands. Does listening to Steps and Spice Girls give u a high? If yes, I feel sorry for you.

Did u ever wonder why , Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ still sells like hot cakes even today? Why rockers can never have enough of Nirvana’s ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’? Why Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath feature in every kind of classics album? Why Queen’s ‘I want to break free’ is still a rage.

Well the truth is, listen to a rock song again and again and u start liking it all the more! The sheer energy of the song grips u, the beautiful rhythm in the guitar riffs comes alive , u can feel it! U can identify with the singer’s emotions!
One thing is for sure, u can never tire of a rock song.

AND i like our INDIAN music .. I like all the songs of KISHORE KUMAR .. He is my favourite singers ... KISHORE , MOHAMMED RAFI , LATA , YESHUDAS are the greatests ... and the new breed of indi-pop singers ..........>>> most of them r 100% hopeless

cleo  1/27/2001 12:12:19 PM  ( 14 of 37 )
The Guitar indeed rules REKHI .... the air waves for sure ...world wide web too ?????

Personally would rather go for 'rock_n_roll' (rather than acid rock) with a.... huge ... kicking BASS guitar... and a lead guitar...used well but ... rather sparingly..

Those into the web are into rock music ???

Maybe ...... if one goes by the price at which the site pushing Rolling stones... got sold ... and if you look at the recording companies (most of them having big rock bands as thier money spinners)... that went after NAPSTER... there's probably a lot more to this Rose !!!

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?... It's Bobby Dylan season guys...

Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve,
I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly,
where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color,
where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
welcoom to Dylan neverland...

I know the rockers do think that there is no place for ... the wimps... lenon... dylan... and the rest .. who have neverthless challenged a generation by thier lyrics ... and their music... IT's STILL ROCK AND ROLL TO ME !!!!

The Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction topped the list of the 100 greatest rock songs in a VH1 poll of 700 people in the music industry.

Five Stones cuts made it, with four each by Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin. Bob Dylan had three plus his composition All Along the Watchtower, but voters liked Jimi Hendrix's version better.

The list's oldest song was Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets, released in 1955. The newest was Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, from 1991.
Nirvana's hit was the only one from the 1990s to make it. It may be because VH1's voters were even older than the network's usual audience. VH1 aims at age 30 and up.

Among the musicians to vote on VH1's panel were U2's Bono, Johnny Cash, Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed and the late Curtis Mayfield.

1. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, The Rolling Stones.

'Classical' Rock, Rohit? LTE formed in 1998 - hardly classic, i'd say. Petrucci is a good shredder, but personally I always preferred the originals, Yes, as far as the keyboards are concerned. Anyone here familar with he Indian rock scene? I'm trying to compile a list of groups from India, and need help with the North East bands.

Bird On The Wire
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If I, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.
Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
he said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
she cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

Oh like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Wow, I'm sick of doubt
Live in the light of certain south

Cruel bindings
The servants have the power

dog-men & their mean women pulling poor blankets over our sailors

I'm sick of dour faces Staring at me from the T.V.[Ekta]Tower,
I want roses in my garden bower; dig?

Royal babies, rubies must now replace aborted
Strangers in the mud

These mutants, blood-meal for the plant that's plowed
they are waiting to take us into the severed garden

Do you know how pale & wanton thrillful comes death
on a stranger hour unannounced, unplanned for

like a scaring over-friendly guest you've brought to bed

Death makes angels of us all & gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws

No more money, no more fancy dress
This other kingdom seems by far the best
until its other jaw reveals incest & loose obedience to a vegetable law

I will not go
Prefer a feast of friends
To the Giant family

The ultimate blooming is always that of love.

The Psychedelic Trip Continues . . . Expand Your Mind

Morrison and Rimbuad

Poems by James Douglas Morrison:

James Douglas 'Jim' Morrison (1943-1971)

On Culture : "Twentieth-century culture’s disease is the inability to feel their reality. People cluster to TV, soap operas, movies, theater, pop idols and they have wild emotion over symbols. But in the reality of their own lives, they’re emotionally dead."

On Film : "The good thing about film is that there aren’t any experts. There’s no authority on film. Any one person can assimilate and contain the whole history of film in himself, which you can’t do in other arts."

On the Future : "We are drifting in blind orbits, helpless, alone."

On Freedom : "I think there should be a national carnival, much the same as Mardi Gras in Rio. There should be a week of national hilarity . . . a cessation of all work, all business, all discrimination, all authority. A week of total freedom. That’d be a start. Of course, the power structure wouldn’t really alter. It would just last for a week and then go back to the way it was. I think we need it."

On Poetry : "If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it’s to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel."

On Society : "Maybe primitive people have less bullshit to let go of, to give up. A person has to be willing to give up everything - not just wealth. All the bullshit he’s been taught - all society’s brainwashing. You have to let go of all that to get to the other side. Most people aren’t willing to do that."

Why Satchmo, why are you writing Roger Water lyrics and twisting them with some Jim Morrisonesque abstrusive sexuality in re pressing knees and death smiling et al? That Tataghat should, apropos nothing, decide to post a Leon Cohen song is perhaps a bit more understandable, though.

Ozzy took his first job as a plumber's assistant. and then a toolmaker's apprentice. Ozzy then went on to work slaughterhouse in Digbeth for two years, killing cows. Perhaps this influenced his musical style, I do not know. Other jobs included an auto mechanic, house painter and even two weeks at a mortuary. His first musical job was working in the Lucas electrical plant tuning car horns. IM NOT THE KIND OF PERSON YOU THINK I AM
I'M NOT THE ANTI-CHRIST OR THE IRON MAN
I HAVE A VISION THAT I JUST CAN'T CONTROL
I FEEL IVE LOST MY SPIRIT AND SOLD MY SOUL
GOT NO CONTROL

I TRIED TO ENTERTAIN YOU THE BEST I CAN
I WISH I STARTED WALKING BEFORE I RAN
BUT I STILL LOVE THE FEELING I GET FROM YOU
I HOPE YOU'LL NEVER STOP CAUSE
IT GETS ME THROUGH...YEAH IT GETS ME THROUGH.......
YEAH THE FEELINGS THAT I HIDE BEHIND
SOMETIMES REALITY'S UNKIND
THE NIGHTMARE STARTS FOR ME AT NIGHT
I DREAD THE LONG AND LONELY NIGHTS

I'M NOT THE KIND OF PERSON YOU THINK I AM
I'M NOT THE ANTI-CHRIST OR THE IRONMAN
BUT I STILL LOVE THE FEELING I GET FROM YOU

I HOPE YOULL NEVER STOP CAUSE IT GETS ME THROUGH...
YEAH I'M JUST TRYIN' TO LIVE....YEAH (REPEAT)

"WHEN -NEVER AGAIN??" I am fed up with all the new rock(yawn) bands and their music. It`s just that you don`t feel like listening to them if you have heard them. Man! they lack the class to make them classic. You know what, they don`t speak to your emotions, their songs. When will I get to hear a band now playing rock the good old way.`IS THERE ANYBODY LISTENING`
